My NEBOSH Experience with Health Matters Training: From Admin to Confident H&S Learner  – By Madeleine McGreevy

Recently, I completed the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety through Health Matters Training, and I wanted to share a bit about the journey—for anyone wondering what it’s really like from the from the learner’s side.

The eLearning Portal: A Solid Head Start
The eLearning portal was a real asset throughout the course. I found the file repository especially useful—it allowed me to download the slides ahead of each session, which meant I could add notes easily as we went through the material. It helped me feel more prepared and organised from the outset.

Weekly Virtual Classrooms: A Welcome Surprise
I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous going into the weekly Virtual Classroom sessions. Coming from an administrative background with only basic knowledge of health and safety, I worried I’d be playing catch-up. But I was quickly reassured. My course mates came from all kinds of industries and experience levels, and our tutor, Brian Magennis, did a brilliant job of breaking everything down into clear, manageable pieces. It was a great reminder that there’s no “perfect” background for learning—just a willingness to engage.

Brian Magennis: The Tutor Who Made It Click
Brian brought real energy and passion to the course. His depth of knowledge was clear from day one, but what really stood out was how approachable and engaging he made the sessions. He was honest about the commitment needed to pass, but also kept things enjoyable with personal stories, practical insights, and the occasional hilarious anecdote. Honestly, 10/10 for Brian

The Exam: Nerves, Tea, and Trusting the Process
Then came exam day. Panic? Just a bit! Despite all the preparation, it had been over a decade since I last sat a formal exam. That said, all the work we’d done on technique and approach paid off. I followed Brian’s advice—read the scenario, took a breather (with a much-needed cup of tea), and mapped out my answers calmly. It’s not an easy exam—this isn’t the kind of course you pass by just showing up—but everything we’d covered in class and on our own time was absolutely on point for what was required.

The Waiting Game
Now it’s time to wait. NEBOSH takes around 50 days to release results, and like most people, I have that little voice wondering if I could’ve done better. But regardless of the outcome, I’ve gained so much from the training. I now have a much deeper understanding of workplace health and safety—something valuable in any career, and especially if you’re considering stepping into the H&S profession.

We wish Madeleine every success with her results! Interested in starting your own NEBOSH journey?
