Joining Health Matters as a Receptionist and Administrator marked a pivotal moment in my post-university journey. As a recent Film and Theatre graduate from QUB, I was stepping into a completely unfamiliar field, this experience has been both challenging and deeply rewarding.
Transitioning from academic life to a professional healthcare and office environment required a significant adjustment. My daily routine changed drastically — early mornings, structured workdays, and responsibilities that directly impacted clients and the wider team. It was a challenge at first, but one that ultimately shaped me into a more disciplined, proactive, and health-conscious individual.
One of the most valuable aspects of my time at Health Matters was the incredible support system I had around me. I was fortunate to be part of a team that guided me through every challenge and difficulty with patience and encouragement. Their support ensured that I always felt comfortable and confident, even when navigating unfamiliar tasks. The trainers in particular were a huge inspiration — their dedication to delivering health and safety training not only made a difference to clients but also motivated me to take pride in the work we were doing together.
In my role, I gained a broad range of skills through daily interactions with clients, trainers, and course delegates. I became confident in answering queries — even on topics that, just six months earlier, I wouldn’t have had a clue about. My work as receptionist and administrator not only improved my communication and organisational skills, but also gave me a strong sense of ownership and pride in my work.
One thing I am grateful for during my time at Health Matters was the impact it had on my personal lifestyle. Being surrounded by a health-focused environment encouraged me to adopt better habits in my own life — from healthier eating and regular physical activity improving my mental wellbeing and self-care, I now feel like I have the confidence and the mindset to achieve my future goals.
Leaving Health Matters was a difficult decision for me, as I truly felt like a valued part of the team and genuinely enjoyed the detailed and purposeful nature of my work. However, I am now moving on to pursue my creative endeavours, and I do so with a deep sense of gratitude. Health Matters has given me direction, confidence, professionalism, and a strong work ethic — all of which I will carry with me as I move forward and work toward achieving my future goals.
