This course is aimed at healthcare workers who assist with medication administration as part of their role. The course aims to help ensure they do so safely, minimising risk to service users and themselves.
This training aims to increase healthcare workers’ knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of the safe handling and administration of medicinal products. Thus, helping to ensure medication is administrated safely, minimising risk to service users and themselves.
On completion of this training, you should be able to:
- Identify current legislation
- Recall policies and procedures and what constitutes ‘Good Practice’
- Use correct methods of dispensing and administration
- Outline the risks to the Health and Safety of residents when assisting with medications
- Use systems , i.e. MDS, NOMAD, Doset boxes
- Identify common errors and why they occur
- Explain the importance of reporting medication errors immediately
- Explain refusal and covert administration
- Demonstrate knowledge of controlled medications
- Explain the procedures for receiving, storing and disposing of medications.
- Legislation

Individuals are assessed via a multi-format question paper.
Upon successfully completing this course, delegates will be given a certificate valid for three years.
It is important to note that training alone cannot ensure safe practice. A robust and structured supervised practice programme must be carried out by suitably experienced and competent senior staff members within the care setting.
