FAQs about NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

This qualification explores general workplace health and safety issues experienced by organisations worldwide. The content looks at how businesses can improve performance by implementing a management system and developing a positive safety culture. The course also aims to educate on how to assess risk, develop safe systems of work, investigate accidents and prepare data to help check the effectiveness of the health and safety management system through monitoring, auditing, and review.
The classroom-based course involves 65 taught hours, typically delivered over ten full days. In addition to this, NEBOSH recommends that delegates input a further 40 hours of self-study to facilitate the achievement of the assessment criteria. In addition to this time, it is estimated that delegates will spend a further 7 hours collectively completing the open book exam and risk assessment practical submission.
The course consists of two units, IG1 and IG2. IG1 is assessed via an open book examination, whereby the candidate is given 24 hours to provide a written response to several tasks based on a workplace health and safety scenario. IG2 involves preparing a risk assessment and summary report, which is submitted within ten days of completion of the IG1 open book examination date. The overall qualification grade is based on performance within the IG1 open book exam result. Delegates achieving 75 marks or higher are awarded a distinction, 65 – 74 marks a credit and 45 – 64 marks a pass. The IG2 practical is graded as either a pass or a failure.
Yes, the International General Certificate is recognised worldwide. NEBOSH values its status as a nationally recognised awarding body. In the UK and increasingly worldwide, accreditation is recognised as a badge of quality, adding value to qualifications.
