FAQs about IOSH Manual Handling – Train the Trainer Course

The Manual Handling Train the Trainer course is an instructor-level course. It is appropriate for individuals who wish to gain the skills and certification to deliver manual handling training. Those who benefit most from having a member of staff trained in this course are larger employers who require regular onsite training for their team.

This IOSH training course can provide businesses with time efficiencies and financial savings. The alternative approach would be outsourcing manual handling training to a third-party training provider. This prestigious IOSH approved instructor programme is the course of choice for many high-profile organisations within the UK and beyond.

The IOSH Manual Handling Train the Trainer course can be categorised into two aspects. First, there is the underpinning theory and then the hands-on practical application.

The course has five defined modules:

  • Legislation & Accountability
  • Anatomy of Spine and Biomechanics
  • Risk Assessment – An Ergonomic Approach
  • Principles of Safer Handling
  • Presentation Skills & Delivery of a Session

This manual handling instructor course is assessed in two ways. First, there is a written assessment and then the delivery of a micro-teaching session.

There are 45 minutes allocated to complete the written aspect under strict examination conditions. In addition, delegates are required to prepare for the practical element during self-directed learning hours. The presentation of the micro-teaching session takes place during a pre-allocated 15-minute slot on the third and final day of the course.

This course is structured into three training days. The days can occur exclusively in the classroom, or clients can opt for a blended approach, with the first of the three days online.

This IOSH approved trainer course is intended for individuals who wish to gain the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their own in–house manual handling (inanimate load) training. It is appropriate for staff working within a diverse range of work sectors, including construction, manufacturing, engineering, offices, retail, and the public sector.

Musculoskeletal injuries are among the highest contributors to work-related injury and ill-health statistics. These injuries are generally a result of poor manual handling techniques and an absence of competent supervision. This course’s primary purpose is to equip suitably experienced and skilled individuals with the knowledge and training required to carry out in-house training within their respective organisations. Thus, helping to ensure legal compliance by providing sufficient manual handling related information, instruction, and training.
